Brussels delights for so many reasons. From the deep history to the gastronomy to the beautiful architecture, it is a wonderful place to spend some time. Churches and cathedrals have a special place on the Brussels’ landscape. Here are three that are worth a visit when you are in town.
Saint Michael and Saint Gudula Cathedral - This dramatic cathedral is located at Treurenberg Hill. A church has stood at this location from at least the 1th century and portions of that original church can still be seen. The interior of the cathedral is dramatic, with twelve pillars and ornate stained-glass windows which further accentuate the cathedral’s gothic style. In the evening, the window at the bottom of the nave is illuminated and is quite beautiful.
Church of Notre-Dame de la Chapelle – This church was constructed during the 13th and 14th century in a Romanesque-Gothic style. This church is most popular for two men that it honors. The burial site of Francois Anneessens is located on the church property. Annessens was killed for promoting civil rights in Brussels. There is also a chapel dedicated to Pieter Breughel the Elder. He was a Flemish painter and printmaker known for creating landscape scenes that included the peasant class.
Church of Saint Jean et Etienne aux Minimes – This church sits at a busy crossroads and is walking distance the Sablon and Marolles neighborhoods. This church dates back to the 8th century and has an architectural style that displays the transition Flemish-Baroque to Neo-Classical. Notable works of art in the interior are worth a look,
